The Switch interlocking Machine

This machine is the heart of the tower's operation. The following is a quote from the Smithsonian.

"In small railroad yards men switched trains from one track to another with manual switches. In the 1860s and 1870s railroads began to mechanize the processing of information that controlled the movement of trains."

" 'Block control' kept trains from entering a section of track before it was clear. Mechanical, electromechanical, and pneumatic 'interlockers' controlled switches and signals. Interlocking machines were among the most complicated 'computing' devices of their day."
